Driving an electric car across a border
Plug standards are largely harmonised. Payment is not. That is the gap that catches people out.
The connector is not the problem
CCS has become the de facto European rapid-charging standard, and Type 2 the AC standard. Physically plugging in across a border is almost never the difficulty. Legacy CHAdeMO units are declining and matter only for older vehicles.
The difficulty is authentication and billing — a research and policy problem in its own right [1].
Cross-border charging interoperability
What actually goes wrong
- Your card is not accepted because your provider has no roaming agreement with that operator in that country.
- The app cannot authenticate because it needs a data connection and you are roaming poorly.
- Pricing is opaque abroad, with a roaming margin on top of a foreign tariff.
- Local schemes require local registration, occasionally with a national ID or bank account.
- Contactless is not universal, though newer EU regulation is pushing that way for new rapid chargers.
Before you set off
- Check operator coverage on your route, not just in the destination country.
- Download offline maps and charger data. Mobile roaming is exactly where you cannot rely on a data connection.
- Know two chargers at every planned stop. Redundancy beats power — see our reliability page.
- Check tariffs in advance where you can. Roaming margins abroad are frequently the largest single surprise.

Common questions
Will my charge card work abroad?
Sometimes. It depends on roaming agreements with the operators on your route, which are not universal.
Do I need a different cable?
Rarely. CCS and Type 2 are effectively standard across Europe.
Is charging more expensive abroad?
Usually, because of roaming margins on top of the local tariff.
Can I pay by contactless card?
Increasingly, and not universally. Do not rely on it as your only method.
