The grid

High renewables share. Low carbon — a large share of nuclear, hydro or renewables. Comfortably favourable for electric driving.

Grid carbon intensity is the variable that decides how large the lifecycle advantage over a combustion car is, and how quickly the battery manufacturing debt is repaid. It is also the number most worth looking up live rather than reading here: it varies by hour with wind and solar output, and the annual average falls year on year as generation decarbonises. The European Environment Agency and most national grid operators publish it.

Charging

CCS is Type 2 with two DC pins bolted underneath. That is why the connector is never your problem anywhere in Europe: your car's socket accepts both, the top half is identical, and a rapid charger simply uses the extra pins. What differs at a border is payment, not the plug. Drawn to relative scale; pin arrangement follows IEC 62196-2.

Adequate on main corridors, thinner away from them. Worth checking your route rather than assuming. Infrastructure density and its effect on adoption has been studied directly [2].

Connector standards are the one genuinely settled thing in European charging: CCS for rapid DC and Type 2 for AC. What is not settled is payment — whether a card issued in one country authenticates on an operator in another depends on roaming agreements that are not universal. Carrying a second card from a different provider is the cheapest insurance available.

Cost

Two numbers dominate running cost, and both are national: the domestic electricity tariff you charge on at home, and the public rapid tariffs you meet on a long journey. The gap between them is large everywhere and larger in some markets than others, which is why the single most consequential question about EV ownership is whether you can charge at home.

Purchase incentives, VAT treatment, company-car taxation and road-tax exemptions all vary by country and several change annually. Systematic review of adoption consistently finds policy to be a dominant driver [1], which is another way of saying the same car is a different financial proposition depending on where it is registered. Anything precise written here would be wrong within a year, so this page deliberately does not quote figures — check the current national scheme before committing to a purchase.

Can I use my charge card in Portugal?
It depends on your provider's roaming agreements with the operators there, which are not universal. Check coverage on your specific route, and carry a second card.
